Gold Weight – Upper Gold Weight Insertion in Facial Paralysis

Dennis I. Bojrab, MD Michigan Ear Institute

Rehabilitation of the paralyzed face is truly and art in evolution. Static procedures attempt to increase tone and symmetry, and dynamic reanimation surgery aims at reestablishing neuromuscular function. The focal point of any medical or surgical approach, however, is management of the eye and avoidance of long-term complications. This article focuses on a simple, yet effective, method of ocular rehabilitaion-gold weighting, of the upper lid. Dr. Bojrab explains the rationale and procedure in a clear, precise fashion to give all surgeons managing facial palsies one more technique for protecting the eye from undue exposure to the external world.
